Alexander Zhulin, Russian coach of 2022 Olympic silver medalists Sinitsina/Katsalapov, explained why he didn’t like Chock and Bates’ free dance.

– Did Madison Chock and Evan Bates’ new free dance impress you?

– Honestly, not really. What they have really well is the purity of the elements. In the Montreal group, the dancers in general are taught the elements in a very high quality way. Every time I look at it, I think that we all, and me in particular, need to pay attention to this component first of all.

But I wouldn’t compare Chok – Bates or anyone else with Lisa Khudaiberdieva – Egor Bazin, or Stepanova – Bukin. Comparisons can be made when people skate in the same warm-up.

I didn’t like the first part of the Americans’ dance at all. Well, first of all, Pink Floyd is a kind of music. What can you do there acting-wise? Nothing. You can show a watch with your hands, which is what Madi and Evan do.

In the second part they found an interesting solution in the plastic: some things are performed as in rapide. Yes, I liked it, I saw a certain novelty in it. But everything happens at a very low speed. So I wouldn’t say there was a ‘wow’ effect at all,” Zhulin said.
