American journalist Jackie Wong offered two possible explanations for the low score received by American figure skater Ilya Malinin for a cleanly executed quadruple axel in the short program of the ISU Grand Prix Final in Beijing, China.

“The most likely explanation could be a simple error, possibly due to entering the score before checking or due to a bad case,” Wong said in a post on social networking site X (formerly Twitter).

The second possible factor influencing the low score, the journalist pointed out the lack of connecting steps.

Recall that the judge Francoise de Rappard from Belgium awarded Ilya Malinin a score of -5 for the quadruple axel, despite the fact that such a score is usually given in the case of a fall of the skater in the process of performing the element.
