Before the start of the Women’s Grand Prix in Omsk there were unexpected events. The truth about the injury of Veronika Zhilina from the team “Plushenko’s Angels” before the start of the competition greatly surprised everyone.

Because of this unexpected situation only two athletes remained the main favorites for victory: Adelia Petrosyan, a student of Eteri Tutberidze, and Alina Gorbacheva, a pupil of Sofia Fedchenko. Already on the first day of the competition, the battle between these two talented athletes attracted attention.

First, the debutante in adult figure skating, Maria Agaeva from the Figure Skating Army team, managed to break into the top three. She demonstrated excellent jumps including triple flip, double axel and triple lutz – triple tulup cascade. Her program on Indian motifs stands out with quality choreography and interesting elements. The only problem is the low difficulty level of the elements, but this can be improved until the next performance. Maria scored a satisfactory 67.22 points.

Adelia Petrosyan, the winner of the first stage of the Grand Prix in Ufa, was unexpectedly only in second place. She under-twisted her triple axel, which went unnoticed by the judges, and performed this element tentatively, receiving a low GOE score. She also made a mistake on her solo triple lutz, landing in a step-out, which deprived her of a key element. This affected her mood and her performance was devoid of emotion and brightness, which is not typical of her. Despite this, her scores on the score sheet remained high, due to the high levels and challenging components, and she ended up scoring 71.48 points. However, her performance left much to be desired and she did not even appear in front of the journalists after the end of the performance.

The leader after the short program was Alina Gorbacheva, who won thanks to the cleanliness of her performance despite the absence of ultra-si elements. She performed a double axel, a solo triple flip and a triple lutz – triple tulup cascade without any mistakes. At the end of her performance, she was a little tentative on the last element, but still successfully completed her performance. Her program is made under the Egyptian theme, but so far she does not fully reveal this image, as she uses a lot of new and unusual choreographic elements. The score for her performance was 75.89 points, and she deservedly takes the first place.

To have two stages in a row is quite an unusual phenomenon in the world of figure skating. Adelia’s mistakes are quite understandable, considering that she didn’t even have time to rest after the previous tournament, which also didn’t go well for her. Probably, the content that Petrosyan will present in the free program will be difficult to surpass, even taking into account her lag after the short program. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that Alina Gorbacheva has quadruple jumps in her arsenal. It remains a mystery whether she will decide to use them – that will be known tomorrow. The impression that without Eteri Tutberidze the girls from the Crystal team are performing below their potential is not limited to Adelia. Yesterday even the absolute favorite among juniors, Alisa Dvoeglazova, suffered a defeat. At the moment Eteri Tutberidze is in the USA for the Grand Prix Skate America where she is supporting Georgian figure skater Nika Egadze.
