A day before the start of the qualification of the Russian Jumping Championships there was an unexpected loss of the main star. The official fan-group of Kamila Valieva announced her absence from the tournament due to health problems.
The information about the athlete’s withdrawal appeared suddenly, given that the day before the fan community was actively discussing the preparation and support of the skater at the upcoming tournament. A representative of Channel One confirmed the information, telling TASS: “Kamila Valieva is not participating in the Russian Jumping Championships. Viewers will be able to see her in a special project of Channel One.” Thus, there is a possibility that the figure skater can be seen in an unusual role.
Possible reasons for Kamila’s absence may be related to difficulties in performing jumps: this season she has not been able to successfully complete ultra-si in competitions, all her attempts ended in falls. Although she could present triple jumps in the team competition, it would be difficult to succeed in the individual event without quadruple jumps.
However, the possibility of illness or injury cannot be ruled out. Last season before the Russian Jumping Championships, all attempts to perform a quadruple tulup ended in failure, but it was at this tournament that Kamila showed great form, successfully performing all quadruple tulups. In the current season, the quadruple jump is also unsuccessful in competitions, but in warm-ups before the start Kamila sometimes succeeds, which shows that the skill is not completely lost.
The question remains how Kamila’s situation will develop at the end of the season and what lies ahead for her. The Russian Jumping Championships were supposed to be Kamila’s last tournament until the CAS decision on the doping case is announced, which is expected no later than February 12, 2024. Thus, at the moment it is impossible to say exactly when we will see Kamila on the competition ice, and what will be the outcome of her sporting career.
