Malinin successfully performed a quadruple axel in the free skating program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but fell from the quadruple lutz and broke off two quads.

Ilia Malinin won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships for the second year in a row.

In his free skating program he successfully performed a quadruple axel and a quadruple lutz, and then tore off a quadruple rittberger but successfully performed a quadruple salchow.

In the second part of his performance he unsuccessfully completed a quadruple lutz, fell on it, broke off a quadruple tulup and presented a triple lutz – triple axel – triple tulup sequences.

Malinin received 95.10 points for his high level of technique, which led to a total score for the free program of 185.78 points.
