Olympic champion Ekaterina Bobrova and figure skating commentator Andrei Zhurankov have shared their opinion on the prospects of American figure skater Ilia Malinin.
“I deeply respect and love Ilia Malinin, I admire his talent. However, when he goes out on the ice and we compare him to skaters from Japan, such as Kagiyama and Shoma Uno, you can see the difference in technique – in footwork, knee work and plasticity. It’s noticeable even to the naked eye. When asked what he should do, my answer is: work. I want him to develop his skills and get closer to the title of figure skating king,” Bobrova said.
Zhurankov complemented her words, saying: “You expressed your thoughts correctly, it was obvious. But you can’t say that Malinin doesn’t own the skate. He can skate, he has technical skill. He may not have the flexibility and plasticity that the Japanese have, and he may not have the artistry that Adam Xiao Him Fa has, but he has his own unique energy.”
