Canadian coach Gauthier sentenced to a year in prison for sex offense against teenager

According to the CBC, the man in question is 61-year-old Richard Gauthier, who specializes in pairs skating. He was charged over two episodes in 1984 and 1985 involving a teenage skater who was between 14 and 15 years old at the time.

Specifically, Gauthier was accused of bathing as well as lying in bed with the minor while naked.

The coach avoided a longer sentence because of mitigating circumstances: the court took into account Gauthier’s own age at the time of the offense (23), as well as the absence of other convictions.

In his defense, Gauthier noted that in those days, personal relationships between athletes and coaches were less regulated. He confirmed that he “lacked judgment” in being alone with the student, but denied any sexual acts.

Gauthier’s attorney did not comment after the sentencing. The victim, for his part, said he hoped his story would inspire others to speak out about misconduct as early as possible.

Gauthier worked with figure skaters for more than 30 years, including Olympic champions Megan Duhamel and Eric Redford. The coach was inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame in 2015, but was expelled after being charged.
