Alexei Yagudin on whether Ilia Malinin is Russian or not

Russian figure skater Alexei Yagudin shared his opinion about 19-year-old American figure skater Ilia Malinin, who became the first in the history of figure skating to perform a quadruple axel in an official competition.

“I don’t understand where he came from like that. He’s just the only one. He’s the only one and there’s all the others. What the Japanese figure skater (Yuzuru Hanyu) was saying, it wasn’t happening, and here’s a man talking and doing. He recently posted a video of a cascade double tulup and immediately a quadruple axel. Honestly, there are simply no other touloups like that in the world.

When we need it, we say it’s ours. When we ask about the quadruple axel, we say: it’s not ours, why discuss it? There were such statements a few days ago. Yes, he is an American figure skater, but it is not an American quadruple axel, it is the quadruple axel of the figure skating world.
