Tuktamysheva retires from figure skating

Read Time:3 Minute, 15 Second

The change of generations in the world of figure skating was inevitable, and many figure skaters came and went without even reaching adulthood. In this context, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva stood out; she remained a constant figure in the world of figure skating. She competed against athletes who were much younger and still did well.

Now information has emerged that Lisa has decided to skip the current season and focus on performing in the show. This event can be called the saddest moment for Russian figure skating, because it indicates that the international ban still prevailed in her sports career.

Liza Tuktamysheva was the ideal candidate to return the competition quotas if Russia were allowed to participate this year. She was the right age, well known to the judges and popular with fans all over the world. Her career has been exemplary and she has had no problems with anti-doping authorities.

However, already before the test skates, signs began to appear that Lisa was losing motivation. Her own words in an interview confirm this. She talked about finding motivation, which she mentioned in various aspects of her life, including music and stories for programs. She recognized that motivation cannot be forced back, it must appear on its own. And this was a worrying sign, especially considering that Lisa spent 16 seasons at the top of figure skating.

At test screenings in Moscow in mid-September, Lisa confirmed her difficulties with motivation. She did not give clear answers regarding her participation in the competition, but indicated that she plans to compete in the third and sixth stages of the Grand Prix in Russia.

Then she said in an interview something that is of great importance in this context: “Have you discussed your doubts with Mishin? Alexey Nikolaevich can hardly force me to do something. Everything comes from my inner feelings. But if something happens, then Naturally, I will discuss this with him. This is our common cause, we have been working together for a long time. It won’t be that that’s it – I don’t want it anymore, I’m finishing it, goodbye. We’ll decide everything through dialogue.”

Apparently, something did happen, and after the first comments about the loss of motivation, it could have been predicted. Even according to Tuktamysheva’s programs, one could feel the changes. Last year’s free program, entitled “Loneliness,” touched the soul deeply, and the same can be said about the new short program.

Initially, Lisa planned to present a short program based on the show number “La Cumparsita”, but in the end she chose a passionate tango to the Russian-language composition “Sky I”.

“The red ribbon at the end is a symbol of lost hope. I extract it from the very depths of my soul and take it with me to the sky, to my lover. I decided to complete the program so that she still goes to him, because hope has faded, and she decided to commit suicide,” this is how the figure skater, choreographed by Ilya Averbukh, described her new program, and her words are filled with deep drama.

No, it’s not surprising. Shcherbakova and Trusova, who are eight years younger than Liza, also realized last year that competitions in Omsk and Krasnoyarsk did not bring as much benefit as performing in the show. There is no light at the end of the tunnel in the form of lifting the ban on participation, but even if Tuktamysheva’s motivation has disappeared…

When Russian figure skaters temporarily suspend their careers, not to mention end them, everyone understands well what this means. There was not even an official statement about the end of his career even from Zagitova, not to mention Trusova and Shcherbakova.

However, when it comes to Liza Tuktamysheva, I would like to admit that this is just a break, and believe that this is really a pause.
