Madison Chock on awarding the U.S. the gold medal at the OI-2022: “It could have been a ceremony at the 2024 Olympics in Paris”
A U.S. figure skater wants gold for the 2022 Olympics team event during the 2024 Games.
At the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games, the Russian team won the figure skating team event, with the Americans coming in second. But after Kamila Valieva was disqualified for doping, the Russians moved to third place and the U.S. moved to first.
Because of the investigation into Valieva’s case, the awarding of the results of those competitions has not yet taken place.
“We have been thinking about it. We would like to have a real Olympic awards ceremony. In our case, it could be a ceremony at the Olympic Games in Paris this coming summer, in the atmosphere of the Olympic spirit.
Internally, I felt a little disappointment and sadness (because of the length of the investigation – Sports.ru). I didn’t realize that it was weighing on us all along until we knew the verdict.
It’s like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders and we can celebrate what we experienced at the Olympics with a clean slate. There is a sense of finality to this whole story and the Beijing Olympics,” said figure skater Madison Chock, who competed for the U.S. in the 2022 team event.
“The wait was long and hard, but we waited. I hope the team will be remembered for the way we handled this situation off the ice – as well as our performances on the ice,” said Evan Bates, who competes in a dance duet with Chock.
Sarah Hirschland, executive director of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, expects to hold the awards as soon as possible, despite possible appeals from those involved in the process.
“There is no scenario in which Team USA does not win the gold medals, and we are committed to getting them. Every one of us wants it as soon as possible.
It doesn’t have to be a ceremony with all three places – gold, silver and bronze. We are prepared to be flexible,” stated Hirschland.
