Jason Brown: “I’m not going to be done with the sport.”
“This year I knew from the very beginning of the season that I would compete, I would be at all the main starts. Last year it was the opposite – I wasn’t sure of anything, I just made decisions step by step.
After Beijing, I was at the peak of my form, and for about a year I was carried by this wave. But this year everything was different, I had to reassemble myself and start from scratch. That’s why I had no strength left for new programs.
My way of thinking has changed: I no longer go to competitions thinking about what place I will take. It doesn’t matter to me anymore, I spent too many years in this race for grades, it used to motivate me and give me an incentive to work.
Now I’ve realized a lot about myself, I’m still learning – but I’m much calmer. I love figure skating, the fans, the performances. This is my life – and I’m just happy to be here at the World Championships.
I’ve spent a lot of time in shows this season – and I think I’ve grown in the presentation and interpretation of my programs. I flew here straight from a show in Japan – I was invited by Yuzuru Hanyu. Working with him is always an incredible experience. He is as responsible and focused on training for the show as he used to be for competitions. I trained side by side with him for many years on the same rink – and I can say for sure: he hasn’t changed at all. I learn from him this professionalism, because a show is just as much work.
Yuzu and his mom saw me off very warmly at the World Championships and wished me good luck.
After the World Championships I will take a short break from performing – I will concentrate on preparing for the next season. We will put on new programs – both for competitions and for shows. But yes, I’m not going to finish with the sport,” said Browna
