Ilia Malinin’s grandfather considers him Russian

The grandfather of Ilia Malinin, a famous figure skater who performs for the U.S. national team, considers him to be of Russian descent, but with an American mentality, as Ilya was born in America, but his roots are in Russia.
Ilya Malinin performs for the US national team. This past season he became the world champion in single skating.
– Isn’t it funny that Ilia is presented as a Russian figure skater in our (Russian) press?
– It is an understandable desire to see him as a Russian athlete. On the other hand, he’s still Russian. Yes, he was born in America, but his roots are here.
Of course, his mentality is already American – he socializes there all the time. There is a completely different life there, other needs – everything is different,” said the skater’s grandfather Valery Malinin in an interview with Sports.
