Ilia Malinin performs a quadruple axel in training before the program at the 2024 World Championships.
Two-time U.S. champion Ilya Malinin performed a quadruple axel during training before the free program at the World Championships.
Malinin is the first person in the world who successfully made this element and inserted it into his competitive programs. At the World Championships 2024, the American figure skater refused to perform this jump in the short program, making a simplified content for himself: quadruple tulup, quadruple lutz in a cascade with a triple tulup and the usual triple axel.
The technical score without the quadruple axel (105.97) did not allow Malinin to pass the first and second place Japanese – Shoma Uno and Yuma Kagiyama with 107.72 and 106.35 points respectively.
