Gleichengauz on Valiyeva’s disqualification: “Our fault is present in any case

Coach Daniil Gleichengauz spoke out about the disqualification of Kamila Valieva.

“Impossible to hold emotions, thoughts, worries for a long time, and I want to already express all of them here.

I will start with Kamila herself. Such athletes appear in professional sport once in many years! When everything comes together in one person, it is a great rarity. Talent, hard work, beauty and more. Camila is a versatile athlete who has skating, ultra-c elements, incredible spins, and image submission.

All of her and our team’s years of hard work was blown out of proportion in an instant! What she went through at the age of 15 and is still going through, no one deserves! It is a complete moral destruction of a human being.

The cardinal rule of protected person has been violated. I won’t go into the stories of what it was really like and how long some of us were with her and tried to be supportive, but it was all there and it couldn’t have been any other way, we are all human and have hearts.

Now a little more about my emotions and thoughts. When Eteri Georgievna called after the team tournament at the Olympics and told me that Kamila had a positive test, I was horrified, but I thought that there would be more tests and she could be out in time for the individual tournament, as I thought about the coronavirus test.

After I realized it was about the doping test, I couldn’t even believe it and thought it was some kind of mistake. I must be honest, I heard the word “Trimetazidine” for the first time in my life at that moment.

Eteri (Tutberidze) and Sergey (Dudakov) prepared an Olympic champion in the team back in 2014, after that the three of us led our athletes to gold and silver medals at the Olympics in Korea, to victories at the European and World Championships. Just as we have always done, we prepared our athletes for this Olympics in Beijing.

Our team is for clean sport, there should be no doping in sport, we have never used it and never will!

Everyone knows we have a system. So what is the logic in giving doping to one of the female athletes? I don’t understand!

I don’t understand how the substance got into Camila’s sample, I know for a fact that none of us could advise our athlete to dope and I am sure in Camila that she never intentionally used it. I myself would give a lot to know the truth about how the substance ended up in her sample.

All this time the lawyers asked us not to comment on the situation, so as not to make things worse. It was a complicated process. For my part, I did what I could to help understand the situation. I went to the interrogation, participated in the hearings via video link. And I am ready to continue to do everything I can to find the truth.

Our guilt is present in any case, as we did not save our athlete. It makes my soul sad and painful,” wrote Gleichenhaus.
