Just a couple more things for now (I’m going to let the dust settle and try to make sense of this all in a Blog tomorrow): 1. I feel the punishment was unduly harsh given a first offense by a then 15-year-old. Strip the results, strip the medals and give shorter ban.

The rules allowed for a warning or a three-month suspension. Even a two-year suspension would have expired by now, giving Valieva a chance to return to competition.

In saying that, I realize there’s a lot we don’t know, including the rationale for the four-year suspension. Hopefully, we will see the full transcript of the CAS case (motivation decision).

Kamila Valieva, who was 15 years old when it all happened, deserves sympathy unless, however unlikely, she knew from the start that she had been given a banned substance. And her entourage should come under investigation,” Philip Hersh wrote.
