Kaori Sakamoto said she was nervous before the 2024 World Championships
Japanese figure skater Kaori Sakamoto commented on her performance at the World Figure Skating Championships 2024. The athlete became the winner of the competition.
“I’m happy, but I’m very tired, to be honest. Today I was very nervous, I couldn’t gather myself and calm down.
At the beginning of the program I stumbled, and it threw me even more off balance. I was frightened, because it never happens to me in training.
But when I landed the axel, I was able to calm down. I trusted myself and did my best.
Of course I would like to keep winning, it’s natural, but I know very well that I can’t be on top forever. So I will have to do my best, and yes – I will have to skate a lot better.
I have three world championship gold medals now, but each one has its own story. The first one I won just a month after the Beijing Olympics, I wasn’t in the best mental state – I guess you could call it burnout. A lot of things happened in that month between the Games and the World Championships, so I told myself that I had to win and not to miss this chance. Yes, I felt a lot of pressure, but I did my best.
The next season was very different. I didn’t do very well in the first half, but the closer I got to the World Championships, the more I wanted to defend my title. These emotions were really bothering me, to be honest. I made a stupid mistake then, which has been bothering me for a long time. So that victory was very difficult for me.
Today’s victory had a new scenario – I had to get back from the fourth place. I’m glad I went through that – and I will cherish this experience even more. I am very, very happy,” said Sakamoto
