Journalist Philip Hersh believes that tournaments are more interesting with Russian figure skaters.

“I wouldn’t be in a hurry to put everything in one basket. Yes, Russia had a massive doping program before Sochi 2014, plus there was doping in other sports: athletics, swimming and so on. But that doesn’t mean that every Russian athlete was doping.

Now we have evidence that Kamila Valieva took a banned drug, but this does not mean that all athletes from Eteri Tutberidze’s group took banned drugs. Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t. But I wouldn’t put them all in the same pile.

But with Russian figure skaters, the competitions become much more interesting. These are the kings of drama: from Plushenko and Mishin, who yelled that Laysacek didn’t have quadruplets, to Eteri Tutberidze and Tamara Moskvina, who is a work of art in her own right. There are actually a lot of incredible people out there, so much so that I even wish I knew Russian so I could talk to them and get to know them better,” Hersh said on The Skating Lesson podcast.
